KHAT has been a part of the Year Four Bahasa Melayu syllabus in the national primary school curriculum since 2014, the Education Ministry said.

In a statement this evening, the ministry said khat was not new to Malaysian schools.

“The Standard Curriculum and Assessment Document (DSKP) for the Bahasa Melayu subject has included khat since 2014.

“This came about through town hall sessions while pilot projects were conducted at certain schools

“The ministry wishes to stress that this will not burden teachers and students as khat will not be included in students’ examinations and (students) will not be assessed,” it said.

The ministry earlier today released an FAQ for a better understanding of khat and why the subject was being introduced to Year Four pupils in vernacular schools next year, following days of public debate over the issue.

This afternoon, Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching met with Chinese and Tamil education groups, who finally agreed to allow khat to be taught in the vernacular schools. – August 6, 2019.

  • Year 2014 is the year where religious bigots were most active.

  • Of course there would not have been any reaction then, as National schools have been converted to de facto Malay religious schools for years already. You would literally have been preaching to the converted.
